Jus` Blues Music Foundation Celebrates Black History Month 2017
The Jus’ Blues Music Foundation, Inc. is affecting Black History Month by celebrating the Queen of the Blues Koko Taylor with a special concert, “Let The Juke Joint Jump” on Sunday, February 26th at the Porter Sanford III Performing Arts & Community Center on 3181 Rainbow Drive in Decatur, GA 30034.
We invite you to join Jus’ Blues in this legendary tribute to one of the 20th century’s most important Blues icons. The Let The Juke Joint Jump Concert features impressive songstresses like; the Empress of the Blues Sandra Hall, Chicago Diva Chick Rodgers (whose CD was produced by KoKo Taylor just before her passing), the First Lady of Blues & Soul Trudy Lynn, and Atlanta’s own Lola Gulley along with Keisha Jackson.
Accurately proclaimed "the Queen of the Blues," Koko Taylor helped keep the tradition of big-voiced, brassy female Blues belters alive, recasting the spirits of early legends like Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Big Mama Thornton, and Memphis Minnie for the modern age. Taylor's rough, raw vocals were perfect for the swaggering new electrified era of the Blues. Her massive hit, "Wang Dang Doodle," served notice that male dominance in the Blues wasn't as exclusive as it seemed. After a productive initial stint on Chess Records, Taylor left to spent decades on Alligator Records. Koko won a Grammy Award in 1985 for the Best Traditional Blues Album and was nominated 8 other times.
Under the musical direction of Grammy nominated Vasti Jackson, a musical force to be reckoned with in the world of the Blues, this production houses true historical significance while preserving its historical legacy. As an artist, Vasti is known for sweat-drenched, soul-ripping performances marked by some of the most stunning and innovative guitar playing in Blues music today. Always on the move, Jackson's fiery guitar work and stellar vocals leave a lasting impression on all audiences whom are lucky enough to see him perform. Mr. Jackson is the Cultural Arts Ambassador for the State of Mississippi.
There have been many men celebrated in Blues music, however, this is a rare opportunity to help us to solidify and preserve the legacy of Koko Taylor, one of the greatest female Blues entertainers of all time.
